Budgam: A major road accident on the Ring Road near Waterwani in central Kashmir’s Budgam district late Saturday evening has resulted in multiple fatalities, reports said.
According to initial reports, a dumper collided head-on with a Sumo passenger vehicle, leaving the latter completely crushed under the impact. The Sumo, reportedly carrying passengers from Mahwara and headed towards Budgam, suffered massive damage, leading to several deaths on the spot.
While the casualties as per officials are feared to be high, the exact number of deceased however is still being verified. Locals and passersby immediately rushed to the scene, helping shift the injured to nearby medical facilities. Police teams also reached the spot and assisted in the rescue operation.
Preliminary information suggests at least five people may have lost their lives, while some reports, including a social media post by Aga Mujtaba, brother of a newly elected legislator, claimed the toll could be as high as ten. Authorities have neither confirmed the figures nor released the identities of the victims, stating that verification is underway.
Officials said that the accident occurred on a busy stretch of the Ring Road known for dense commercial traffic. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage.
