Mughal Road reopens for LMVs after 5-week closure

Poonch, Feb 27: The historic Mughal Road, an alternate link between Jammu and the Kashmir valley, reopened for Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) on Friday after remaining closed for five weeks due to heavy snowfall, with traffic allowed between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. subject to fair weather conditions, officials said.

The road opened following the clearance of snow accumulation from Bufliaz to Peer Ki Gali stretch.

The operation of vehicular traffic, according to officials, remained smooth during the permissible hours i.e., 11 am to 3 pm.

A day earlier, on February 26, 2026, the District Magistrate (DM) Poonch had ordered that the movement of Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) would be allowed on Mughal road from Bufliaz to Peer Ki Gali with effect from February 27, 2026, between 11 am and 3 pm only, subject to fair weather conditions and absence of any unforeseen exigencies, in view of the clearance of snow accumulation from Bufliaz to Peer Ki Gali stretch (km 43.600) on Mughal Road (NH-701A), and pursuant to the recommendation for its opening as conveyed by the Officer Commanding, 79 RCC (GREF) vide Communication No 2115/RTS/WED/E2 dated February 25, 2026.

DM Poonch had asked the Officer Commanding, 79 RCC (GREF) to ensure continuous monitoring of avalanche-prone zones to facilitate safe, smooth, and uninterrupted vehicular movement besides ensuring deployment of adequate men and machinery at vulnerable stretches and avalanche-prone areas along the route to promptly address any eventualities such as landslides, avalanches, shooting stones, etc.

He had also directed the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Poonch, and the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Traffic Rural, Jammu to deploy sufficient personnel at Behramgalla, Bufliaz, and Poshana check posts to ensure smooth regulation of traffic, strict compliance with his (DM’s) order, and adherence to the notified timings.

The commuters were asked to plan their travel strictly in accordance with traffic advisories issued by the Traffic Police in this regard.
