Mughal Road misses tourism boom due to lack of basic facilities

Shopian, Aug 2: Despite its breathtaking alpine vistas and deep historical significance, the Mughal Road continues to be underused, largely due to poor infrastructure, lack of basic amenities, and near-absent mobile connectivity.

The 84-kilometre stretch, linking Shopian in south Kashmir to Bufliaz in Jammu’s Poonch district, winds through meadows, forests, and high-altitude passes once traversed by Mughal emperors. But while its natural beauty is undeniable, the route remains ill-equipped to serve tourists or even locals.

“There is nothing along the road—not even a place to stop safely. And if your vehicle breaks down, there’s no mobile signal to call for help,” said Shahbaz Ahmad, a driver from Rajouri.

Recently, the central government approved a Rs 3,830 crore tunnel project aimed at converting the fair-weather route into an all-weather corridor, offering a vital alternative to the frequently closed Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. “The tunnel will be a game changer,” said Mitha Gatoo, a social activist from Shopian. “But the current state of the road needs urgent attention too.”

Landmarks like Pir Ki Gali—perched at over 11,500 feet—and historic halting points such as Mughal Sarai, Sukh Sarai, and Dobijan spring remain largely overlooked due to the lack of tourist infrastructure. “There is huge potential here—heritage, ecology, history—but no supporting services,” Gatoo added.

Since opening to traffic in 2009, the road was envisioned as both a strategic link and an economic driver for the Pir Panjal region. But with no toilets, fuel stations, food stalls, or mobile coverage, the vision remains unfulfilled.

“Even locals avoid using it for emergencies. If anything happens, you’re on your own,” said Javed Ahmad, a resident of Shopian.

As work on the tunnel awaits initiation, residents hope the Mughal Road will finally be developed as a full-fledged tourism and development corridor.
