SRINAGAR: Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir, Molvi Muhammad Umar Farooq, has expressed concern over declining social conduct and the rising culture of verbal hostility in society during a Ramzan sermon at Masjid Abu Bakr (RA), Zoonimar Srinagar.
Addressing the congregation, he emphasised Ikhlaq (noble character), stating that Ramzan is not solely about fasting from food and drink but about moral transformation. He highlighted that true fasting involves purification of speech, discipline of thought, and refinement of behaviour. According to him, speech filled with ridicule or hurtful words reflects a deeper moral crisis that the month of Ramzan seeks to correct.
The Mirwaiz expressed particular concern over the misuse of social media, noting that platforms intended for communication and constructive engagement have increasingly become venues for abuse and personal attacks. He stressed that differences of opinion must not lead to disrespect, humiliation, or dehumanisation.
Quoting the Prophet (SAW) — “A believer either speaks good or remains silent” —Umar urged the community, especially the youth, to uphold dignity, restraint, and compassion, ensuring that Ramzan serves as a means of moral reform and social harmony.
