SRINAGAR: Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir, Molvi Mohammad Umar Farooq, expressed deep concern over the arrest of individuals in connection with decades-old cases, during the recent Friday congregation at Jama Masjid Srinagar.
He said the ongoing detentions have created anxiety and uncertainty, particularly for those and their families who have long since disengaged from past conflicts.
Highlighting the plight of thousands of Kashmiri prisoners languishing in jails both inside and outside Jammu Kashmir, some for decades, Umar described the continued arrests as exacerbating the suffering of their families.
He pointed to serious humanitarian and legal concerns, noting that detention outside the Union Territory often causes delays in trial proceedings and limits family access, contrary to principles of humane treatment and natural justice.
Urging the elected government to intervene, the Mirwaiz called for a review of old cases and requested the transfer of detainees back to Jammu Kashmir to ensure a fairer and more compassionate process.
He also appealed for an immediate halt to arrests of individuals who have been disengaged from violence for decades.
