SRINAGAR: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has identified eight vacancies for induction into the Indian Police Service (IPS) from the Jammu and Kashmir segment of the joint AGMUT cadre.
According to a letter, the MHA has determined a total of eight vacancies for the years 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 for IPS appointments by promotion.
“…In terms of the provisions contained in Rule 4(2) of the IPS Recruitment Rules, 1954, read with Regulation 5(1) of the IPS (Appointment by Promotion) Regulations, 1955, five vacancies are re-determined for the Select List 2021, zero vacancy for the Select List 2022, two vacancies for the Select List 2023, and one vacancy for the Select List 2024 in respect of the Jammu and Kashmir segment of the joint AGMUT cadre,” reads the MHA letter addressed to the UT Division of the Ministry and the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
The Jammu and Kashmir Police falls under the direct control of the MHA following the reorganisation of the erstwhile state into a Union Territory.
The letter further states that five unfilled vacancies from the Select Lists of 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 have been carried forward and re-determined for the year 2021.
These vacancies were re-assessed as, out of 32 vacancies, 27 appointments were notified in the IPS cadre of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir on September 29, 2023. The Selection Committee Meeting (SCM) for these appointments was held on July 21, 2023.
As per the communiqué, three vacancies were determined for 2023 and 2024 due to the retirement of an equal number of IPS officers.
The Ministry has directed its Union Territory Division and the UPSC to take further necessary action as per the IPS Promotion Regulations.
In 2021, the Parliament passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2021, merging the Jammu and Kashmir cadre of All India Services (IAS, IPS, and IFoS) with the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, and Union Territory) cadre. (KNO)
