Srinagar, Jul 4: Mehrajuddin Wadoo, the celebrated former India international and one of J&K’s most iconic footballers, on Friday said that his elevation as president of the Football Players Association of India (FPAI) was a matter of pride and responsibility, vowing to serve as a strong voice for footballers across the country.
Speaking to Greater Kashmir shortly after his appointment, Wadoo said, “I am feeling very proud to be the president of this association. This is the association of Indian football players; every registered professional footballer in India is a part of it. It was founded to be the collective voice of Indian footballers, and now that I am at the helm, my aim is to ensure that voice becomes louder and clearer.”
Wadoo, who hails from Srinagar, said his focus would also include addressing long-pending football-related issues in J&K.
“Being from J&K, I am well aware of the challenges players face: irregular leagues, lack of structure, and no proper elections. At the end of the day, the players suffer. I want to change that,” he said.
He said he plans to organise quality coaching camps, bring top coaches to J&K, and ensure talented players are given opportunities to grow, stating that our youth deserve a strong platform.
Meanwhile, the District Football Association (DFA) Srinagar congratulated Wadoo on his appointment, terming it a landmark moment for the entire football fraternity of J&K.
In a statement, the DFA said, “We extend our heartiest congratulations to Mehrajuddin Wadoo on his historic appointment as the President of the Football Players Association of India (FPAI).”
