SRINAGAR: A large quantity of medicines worth several lakhs was found dumped in a forest canal in the Gundrehman area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Saturday, triggering alarm among locals and authorities.

Locals who discovered the abandoned medicines scattered across the canal immediately alerted officials. Teams from the Drug Control Department Ganderbal arrived at the scene and launched an investigation.

Confirming the recovery, a departmental official stated, “We have taken samples from the spot, and efforts are underway to trace the source of these medicines. Strict action will be taken against the culprits.”

The medicines, if expired or chemically active, could contaminate local water sources and harm both wildlife and human populations.

“This is not only criminal wastage of essential drugs but also a grave threat to our environment,” said a local resident, urging authorities to identify and punish those responsible.

Officials have assured the public of a comprehensive investigation. [KNT]
