SRINAGAR: The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police has arrested a man who had been on the run for nearly a decade after allegedly killing his 10-year-old daughter in Jammu in 2016, officials said on Saturday.

The accused, identified as Ramesh Kumar, a native of Chhatarpur district in Madhya Pradesh, was wanted in a murder case registered under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code at Gandhi Nagar Police Station in Jammu.

Police said Kumar was working as a construction labourer in Jammu when the incident took place. Investigators alleged that he attacked his 10-year-old daughter with a stick, striking her on the head after suspecting that she was not his biological child. The injured girl was taken for treatment but later succumbed to her injuries.

After the incident, Kumar fled Jammu and remained absconding for about 10 years. During this period, he allegedly assumed a new identity and moved to Delhi under the name “Rajveer” to evade arrest.

Officials said the breakthrough came after the Jammu and Kashmir Police sought assistance from the Delhi Police in tracing the accused in the decade-old case.

Acting on the request, the Crime Branch developed intelligence and began tracking the suspect. During the investigation, inputs suggested that he was living in Sanjay Colony in the Bhati Mines area of southeast Delhi under a false identity.

A special team conducted sustained surveillance and technical analysis in the area, after which the accused was traced and apprehended from Bhati Mines.

Following his detention, the Crime Branch informed the Jammu and Kashmir Police and handed him over to the investigating officer from Jammu, who formally arrested him in connection with the case.
