SRINAGAR: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday called upon the University of Jammu to start short-term professional programmes to address climate challenges and conduct dedicated research on floods and landslides, stressing the urgent need for sustainable solutions in the Union Territory.
Addressing the Foundation Day ceremony of Jammu University, the LG said innovation, technology, and sustainability must be integrated into education to prepare students for future challenges. He emphasised that youth should drive development without compromising ecosystems and optimise the use of resources through modern innovation.
“Today the whole world is affected by natural disasters. There was massive destruction of infrastructure and loss of lives in Jammu and Kashmir. Once road connectivity is restored, the university must send groups of students to serve in different areas and prepare teams of volunteers to assist the district administration in relief and rehabilitation,” Sinha said.
The LG urged faculty members to guide youth in balancing development with conservation, adding that protecting the environment was a shared responsibility. He said universities must continue to evolve, transforming classrooms into centres of creativity, curiosity, and real-world problem-solving.
The event also saw felicitation of alumni, NSS and NCC volunteers, and retired staff, while Power Grid Corporation of India Limited donated a PA system and streetlights under its CSR initiative.
