SRINAGAR: Leh remained under curfew for the fifth consecutive day on Sunday, with Lt Governor Kavinder Gupta scheduled to hold a security review meeting to decide on any relaxation of restrictions, officials said, as per Daily Excelsior.

The curfew was imposed on Wednesday evening following widespread protests during a shutdown called by the Leh Apex Body (LAB), which is demanding statehood for the region and the extension of the Sixth Schedule to Ladakh.

Authorities briefly relaxed the curfew for four hours on Saturday in a phased manner, and the period passed off without incident.

The unrest on Wednesday left four people dead and dozens injured, while over 50 individuals were taken into custody for alleged involvement in the rioting. Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was among those detained and has been lodged in Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan under the National Security Act.

Officials said security forces continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further disturbances.
