SRINAGAR: Leh town in Ladakh witnessed the first relaxation of curfew on Saturday, three days after restrictions were imposed following widespread violence that left four dead and 90 injured. The phased easing allowed residents to access essential commodities, bringing temporary relief to the town, reports NDTV.

Police and paramilitary forces intensified patrolling and checks from early morning to ensure law and order during the relaxation period, officials said, adding that no untoward incidents were reported. Director General of Police, Ladakh, S D Singh Jamwal, confirmed the curfew was relaxed for a total of four hours: from 1 PM to 3 PM in old city areas and from 3.30 PM to 5.30 PM in new areas.

The curfew had been imposed on Wednesday evening after violent protests erupted during a shutdown called by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) demanding statehood for Ladakh and the extension of the Sixth Schedule. Lt Governor Kavinder Gupta chaired a high-level security review at Raj Bhavan prior to the relaxation.

Authorities announced the easing of restrictions through public address systems, and shops selling essential goods saw heavy rushes soon after opening. Security forces remained on high alert to prevent any further disturbances.
