SRINAGAR: Continuous rains and flash floods in Ramban district have triggered fresh land sinking and slipping in Tangar village, with large stretches of land sliding towards the Chenab River, leaving residents in panic.

Officials and locals said that cracks have appeared in at least 18 residential houses, one shop, and the Government High School Tangar, which has now been declared unsafe. Residents warned that if the land movement continues, more than 13 additional houses and vital infrastructure could be at risk.

Locals said a 2.5 to 3-kilometre stretch of Tangar is gradually sliding downhill, endangering Wards 1, 2, 3, and 7. In Ward 7 (New Baas), fresh land sliding has caused house collapses, while several electric poles have toppled, leading to power outages.

Deputy Commissioner Ramban, Muhammad Ilyas Khan, along with Member of Assembly Ramban, Additional SP Mujeeb ur Rahman, and senior officials, visited the area to assess the situation. The DC directed Tehsildar Rahmat to stay stationed in Tangar and instructed Revenue, Police, and SDRF teams to remain on alert for immediate response.

Residents expressed fears that the shifting land from the mountain slopes could escalate into a major disaster if the sliding continues unchecked. (KNO)
