KU’s Prof Jeelani Conferred with National Geoscience Award

SRINAGAR: Prof Ghulam Jeelani, Dean of the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Head of the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Kashmir, has been conferred with the National Geoscience Award by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.

Instituted by the Ministry of Mines, the award is among the highest national honours in the field of geoscience. Prof Jeelani was recognised for his research in isotope hydrology and Himalayan environmental studies, which has advanced understanding of water resources, glaciers and the impacts of climate change in the region.

Congratulating him on the achievement, KU Vice-Chancellor Prof Nilofer Khan said, “His work in the field of isotope hydrology has made a valuable contribution to scientific knowledge and to addressing pressing environmental challenges. Prof Jeelani’s recognition at the national level reflects the quality of research being carried out at our university.”

She added that the award would inspire faculty and students to pursue research with greater commitment.

The recognition underscores the University of Kashmir’s growing stature in national and international scientific research, while highlighting its contributions to addressing environmental challenges and shaping the next generation of scholars.
