Handwara: The Principal District and Sessions Court Kupwara has sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment in a case involving the kidnapping and sexual assault of a minor, officials said.
The accused, Irshad Ahmad Mir, as learnt by Alfaaz – The Words, was convicted in connection with FIR No. 69/2021 registered at Police Station Kralgund. The court awarded the accused twenty years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹50,000 under Section 4(2) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
In addition, the court sentenced the convict to three years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹10,000 under Section 363 of the Indian Penal Code. Both sentences will run concurrently.
Officials said the case pertains to a 2021 incident involving the abduction and sexual assault of a minor girl. They added that the conviction followed a meticulous investigation by Handwara Police, which ensured that the charges were proven in court.
Police described the judgment as a significant outcome in their efforts to deliver justice in crimes against children, reiterating their resolve to act strictly against offenders and safeguard vulnerable sections of society.
