SRINAGAR: The anti-militancy operation in Kulgam’s Akhal forest, underway since August 1, has reached its final phase, a senior police official confirmed on Wednesday.
The prolonged encounter has so far claimed the lives of two Army soldiers and left nine others injured. Security forces have also eliminated two militants, though their identities and group affiliation remain undisclosed.
“This is the final stage of the Akhal operation,” Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, VK Birdi, told reporters during the full dress rehearsal for Independence Day celebrations at Bakshi Stadium. He added that further details would be shared once the operation concludes.
This is the longest-running anti-militancy operation in the Kashmir Valley in recent years.
Speaking on Independence Day security, Birdi said rehearsals and drills had been successfully completed. “The main event will be held in Srinagar, where the VVIP will take the salute. Srinagar Police, in coordination with CAPFs, has put in place multi-layered security arrangements, including high-rise spotters,” he said.
