
Srinagar, Mar 3: In a significant development, the University of Kashmir is likely to host All India Inter-University Wushu Championship in April this year.
The move is aimed at continuing the efforts of the varsity administration towards youth engagement.
A KU official said that around 300 universities from across India are expected to participate in the Inter-University event.
The event is a move beyond conventional classroom learning to promote student engagement through cultural, co-curricular and large-scale sporting activities.
The KU official said that University has been actively fostering an inclusive environment where students are encouraged to take part in activities that contribute to their overall personality development, leadership skills and team spirit.
“The University has strengthened its sports culture by hosting major national-level events, drawing participation from institutions across the country” the KU official said.
Earlier, Vice Chancellor KU Prof. Nilofer Khan in her address at 21st Convocation mentioned about the efforts given by the university for youth engagement.
Earlier this year, the University hosted the All India Inter-University Powerlifting Championship 2025 which witnessed participation from over 200 universities.
“It was one of the largest sporting congregations on campus in recent years,” the official said.
The power lifting championship brought together student-athletes from diverse regions and KU was a competitive platform for all the participants.
A KU official said that such events not only provide exposure to local students but also encourage youth engagement by channelising their energies into constructive and competitive activities.
“The aim is to provide opportunities to students that go beyond academics and help to nurture well-rounded individuals,” the official said.
Notably, beyond academics, student engagement is actively promoted through cultural and co-curricular activities.
KU has a full-fledged Department of Physical Education with a Director and a team of qualified coaches in various games.
Notably, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has set up a nodal centre in the Department of Physical Educational with a view to foster the spirit of adventure sports in the universities and Colleges in Northern India.
Kashmir University has become a facility centre for various adventure sports like Ice-Sking, Ski-montaineering,Mountaineering, Water Sking, Kayaking and canoeing, Aqua Para shooting and White Water Rafting.
