Srinagar, Jun 20: The University of Kashmir is set to witness a major boost in its sports infrastructure, with a Rs 16 crore proposal already in the pipeline for the upgradation of its main cricket ground. The ambitious project includes installation of floodlights, construction of pavilion and dugouts—aimed at transforming the facility into a state-of-the-art cricket arena.

According to Dr Surjeet Singh, coordinator of the physical education and sports department at Kashmir University, the proposed development is approved and awaiting tendering and will bring the campus’s cricket infrastructure in line with professional standards set by the Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI).

“The project is already approved and is in the pipeline. The tendering process is expected to begin within a month,” the top official said. “Once complete, the ground will be equipped with modern facilities comparable to national-level venues.”

The official added that the turf pitches at the university are already maintained to BCCI standards and that several big cricketing events have been held inside the campus.

Dr Singh that the proposed infrastructure aims not only to improve training and performance for the university’s cricket teams but also to position the campus as a potential host for high-profile inter-university and regional tournaments. Meanwhile, despite some delays—reportedly related to design and budgeting—officials at the Kashmir University remain optimistic that the facility could be operational by the end of the year.
