“Solar is no longer the future for Kashmir. It is the present—and it belongs on every rooftop,” says Akhtar Rasool Para, Sales & Marketing Head of Kashmir Renewable Energy, the firm that has quietly emerged as the biggest driving force behind Jammu and Kashmir’s rooftop solar revolution.
Across the Union Territory, a silent but powerful transformation is underway. Thousands of households that once struggled with rising electricity bills and erratic supply are now enjoying near-zero power bills. The credit, in large measure, goes to Kashmir Renewable Energy, a company that has translated the Government of India’s PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana into real, measurable savings for common families.
From Awareness Gap to Rooftop Reality
Until a few years ago, rooftop solar in J&K remained largely theoretical. People had heard about it, but very few had seen it installed successfully in their neighbourhoods. Complicated procedures, lack of trust, and limited awareness kept adoption low.
That changed with Kashmir Renewable Energy’s aggressive grassroots approach.
“When we started, people were curious but hesitant,” Para recalls. “Today, the situation is completely different. People call us because their neighbour has already installed solar and is paying almost nothing for electricity.”
The company’s numbers reflect this shift:
–
Over 890 rooftop solar systems installed across J&K
–
4 megawatts of solar capacity already operational
–
1.5 megawatts under active execution
–
Operations covering every district of the Union Territory
A remarkable 98% subsidy success rate
PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: Solar Made Simple
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is one of the most citizen-friendly energy schemes launched by the Centre. It offers substantial subsidies, easy bank loans, and net metering facilities, allowing households to produce and consume their own electricity.
Kashmir Renewable Energy is an officially empanelled vendor under this scheme, ensuring compliance with all technical and government norms.
“People often think government schemes are difficult,” Para explains. “Our job is to remove that fear. The customer should not feel burdened by paperwork or portals. We handle everything.”
What It Means for a Typical Household
–
For an average household consuming 200–300 units per month, a 3 kW solar system is generally sufficient.
–
Financially, the model is compelling:
–
Total system cost: Rs 1.6–1.8 lakh
–
Upfront payment: Just 5% (Rs 9,000 – Rs 10,000)
–
Monthly EMI: Around Rs 1,000
–
Central subsidy: Rs 85,800, credited directly to the customer’s bank account, usually within 10 days
–
Additional J&K UT subsidy within a few months
“In most cases, the EMI is lower than the old electricity bill,” Para notes. “So the customer starts saving from the very first month.”
Most households recover their investment within 3 to 4 years, followed by over 20 years of free electricity, backed by 25-year panel warranties.
Net Metering: Turning Roofs into Assets
A key feature of rooftop solar is net metering. During the day, solar panels power the home, and surplus electricity is exported to the grid. At night, the household draws electricity from the grid using those credited units.
“Your roof becomes a mini power station,” Para says. “If you don’t use all the electricity you generate, the grid stores it for you.”
Kashmir Renewable Energy coordinates the entire net metering process with power authorities, ensuring smooth activation and transparency for customers.
Why Kashmir Renewable Energy Stands Out
What differentiates the company is its uncompromising focus on quality and long-term performance.
“We only install brands we trust ourselves,” Para asserts. “That’s why we work with Tata Power Solar and Microtek. This is a 25-year investment. There is no room for shortcuts.”
Other key strengths include:
–
Doorstep service in all districts of J&K
–
End-to-end handling of registration, loans, installation, inspection, & subsidies
–
Strong local technical teams for after-sales support
–
Execution of a 70 MW solar project for government buildings, reflecting institutional trust
Beyond Homes: Powering Businesses and Institutions
Kashmir Renewable Energy also caters to commercial and industrial consumers, including factories, colleges, and large establishments.
“High-consumption users benefit the most,” Para explains. “For businesses, solar directly improves profitability.”
A Vision Rooted in Kashmir’s Future
The company’s ambition extends beyond installations.
“Our mission is to end the electricity crisis in J&K,” Para says. “That will only happen when solar is everywhere—on homes, on institutions, across every district.”
With each rooftop installation, pressure on the grid reduces, household finances improve, and the region moves closer to energy self-reliance.
Take the First Step Toward Solar Freedom
