SRINAGAR: Kashmir bid farewell to one of its respected educationists, Hirdey Nath Koul, former Principal of Islamia School, Rajouri Kadal, Srinagar. Settled in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, Koul hailed from Banamohalla, Habbakadal, and carried with him the rich traditions of Kashmiri Pandit scholarship, discipline, and service. His passing marks not only the loss of a dedicated teacher but also the fading of a golden era in the Valley’s education system. He passed away on September 10.

Belonging to the illustrious cadre of Kashmiri Pandit teachers, Koul left an indelible mark on generations of students. As Principal of Islamia School, he was admired equally by colleagues, parents, and pupils for his discipline, kindness, and sense of duty. His classrooms were more than spaces of learning—they were places where values of honesty, hard work, and respect were nurtured.

In Kashmir’s socio-cultural fabric, education has often served as a bridge between communities. Teachers like Koul embodied this spirit of harmony, dedicating their lives to service beyond divisions. His career stands as a symbol of inclusiveness, reflecting a time when Pandit educators at Islamia Schools across the Valley, including stalwarts like Raina Sir and Niranjan Sir, dedicated themselves wholeheartedly to shaping young lives.

The turmoil of the 1990s fractured much of that inclusive tradition. Many such teachers were lost to memory, their contributions overshadowed by political events. The passing of Hirdey Nath Koul serves as a poignant reminder of the need to honour those torchbearers who kept alive the ideals of unity and shared progress.

Expressing condolences, former students recalled the personal bonds they shared with him. “Speaking to his son, Daya Krishan Koul, and daughter-in-law Meenakshi brought back childhood memories—it felt as though we were once again speaking to Sir himself,” said one grieving former pupil, reflecting the deep imprint Koul left on those who knew him.

Calls have also been made to recognise the service of Pandit teachers who taught at Islamia Schools, with an appeal to Mirwaiz Dr Umar Farooq to initiate a formal tribute. “Honouring them would not only acknowledge their selfless service but also reaffirm Kashmir’s legacy of inclusiveness, harmony, and gratitude,” a former student said.

With his demise, an important chapter in Kashmir’s educational journey has closed. Yet the legacy of Hirdey Nath Koul lives on in the memories of his students and in the timeless lessons he imparted. He will be remembered as a distinguished administrator, a compassionate teacher, and above all, a symbol of dedication and service.
