
SRINAGAR: The Department of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Medicine at Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla, under the patronage of Principal Prof Majid Jehangir, organised a Continuing Medical Education (CME)-cum-Hands-On Workshop titled “Advanced Lung Function Assessment” in collaboration with the PURE Foundation, Pune.
The workshop was inaugurated by Prof Majid Jehangir, Principal GMC Baramulla, alongside Prof Shafqat Ahmad Lone, Registrar Academics; Dr Parvaiz Masoodi, Medical Superintendent; Dr Shumail Bashir, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of TB and Respiratory Medicine; and course directors Dr Sundeep Salvi and Dr Deesha Ghorpade.
In her welcome address, Organising Chairperson Dr Shumail Bashir highlighted the objectives of the workshop, setting the stage for a day of intensive learning. Prof Jehangir, in his inaugural remarks, underlined the significance of advanced diagnostic modalities in respiratory medicine, particularly in Kashmir’s colder climate, where pulmonary ailments are widespread.
The academic sessions featured lectures on Spirometry by Dr Aqeel Hussain, FeNO (Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide) by Dr Shumail Bashir, Lung Oscillometry by Dr Deesha Ghorpade with emphasis on pediatric applications, and DLCO and Body Plethysmography by Dr Sundeep Salvi. Together, the sessions provided participants with an in-depth understanding of contemporary lung function assessment techniques.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members, postgraduate students, and medical interns. Senior respiratory experts, including Prof Naveed Nazir Shah, Head of Chest Disease Hospital, and Prof Sonaullah Shah, Head of Medicine at SKIMS Soura, added to the academic depth of the programme with their expert commentary.
A hands-on session followed the lectures, allowing participants to engage directly with advanced lung function testing equipment and procedures. The practical segment reinforced the theoretical knowledge gained during the academic sessions.
The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks by the organising committee, bringing to a close a day marked by insightful learning, collaboration, and a shared commitment to improving respiratory healthcare in the region.
