Srinagar, Dec 31: The Kashmir Artisans Welfare Organisation (KAWO) has expressed grave concern over reports of assaults on Kashmiri traders operating outside Jammu and Kashmir, particularly those engaged in the traditional shawl trade.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, KAWO patron G M Dug said the recent incidents, including the circulation of disturbing videos on social media, have caused widespread fear and anxiety among Kashmiri artisans and traders who travel to different parts of the country to earn their livelihood. He said Kashmiri traders have been conducting business across India for decades and are globally recognised for their craftsmanship, peaceful conduct and contribution to local economies.
Dug said the recent spurt in such incidents has raised serious concerns about the safety and security of traders who are simply pursuing legitimate business activities. He termed the attacks unacceptable and said they threaten not only livelihoods but also the long-standing tradition of inter-state trade carried out by Kashmiri artisans.
The organisation strongly condemned the assaults and appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to issue immediate directions to state governments and police authorities to ensure the safety of Kashmiri traders across the country and to take swift action against those responsible.
KAWO also sought the intervention of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to take up the matter with concerned states and ensure effective measures are put in place to safeguard Kashmiri artisans and traders working outside the Union Territory.
