SRINAGAR: Bashir Ahmad Ganie, a master weaver from Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, has been selected for the National Handloom Award 2024 for his exceptional contribution to the traditional art of Kani Shawl weaving. The accolade is among 19 National Handloom Awards to be conferred this year by the Ministry of Textiles.
The award will be presented by the Hon’ble President of India during the 11th National Handloom Day celebrations on August 7, 2025, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The ceremony will also see the presence of Union Minister of Textiles Shri Giriraj Singh, along with MPs, government officials, industry leaders, and over 500 weavers from across the country.
Bashir Ahmad Ganie has been recognised under the weaving category for his exemplary skill and commitment to preserving the Kani Shawl tradition, a centuries-old handloom heritage of Kashmir known for its intricate craftsmanship and cultural value.
The National Handloom Award comprises a cash prize of Rs 3.5 lakh, agold coin (mounted) a Tamrapatra, a shawl, and a certificate of recognition. The award celebrates artisans whose work demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship and innovation, motivating others within the sector.
In total, 24 awardees will be honoured this year – including 5 Sant Kabir Awards and 19 National Handloom Awards – under the Handloom Marketing Assistance (HMA) component of the National Handloom Development Programme (NHDP).
