SRINAGAR: A truck carrying 11 metric tonnes of apples and pears from the Kashmir Valley arrived at the Gultekdi Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Pune, marking a significant milestone in the integration of agricultural mandis across states through a unified digital marketplace.

According to media reports, this marked the first-ever interstate trade under the National Agriculture Market (eNAM) platform between Jammu and Kashmir and Maharashtra. Launched by the Government of India, eNAM connects APMCs nationwide to create a single, transparent market for agricultural commodities, enabling farmers and traders to transact seamlessly across state borders.

Maharashtra has been an early adopter of this digital transformation, with 133 APMCs in the state already linked to the platform. Vinayak Kokare, joint director at the Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board, told the media, “Under the eNAM scheme of the Government of India, we have associated 133 APMCs of Maharashtra. We appeal to APMC traders to do maximum trading under eNAM. This will assure good price discovery, assurance of quality, and transparent trading and transactions.”

The digital mechanism of eNAM allows farmers and traders from distant regions to bypass traditional barriers, middlemen, and inefficiencies. This trade between Jammu and Kashmir and Maharashtra signals a broader shift in India’s agricultural marketing, reflecting growing maturity in the country’s agri-tech infrastructure.

With more APMCs joining the platform and increasing awareness among stakeholders, media reports indicate that the government’s push toward transparent, fair, and efficient agricultural markets is steadily gaining momentum.
