JU’s Pol Science DAC recommends removal of topics on Jinnah, Iqbal, Sir Syed from syllabus

Jammu, Mar 23: The Faculty or Departmental Affairs Committee (DAC) of the Political Science Department of Jammu University (JU) has recommended the removal of topics concerning Mohd Ali Jinnah, Syed Ahmad Khan and Mohd Iqbal from the course content of the one-year Postgraduate programme and course content of the two-year Postgraduate Programme.

The recommendation has been made to the Board of Studies (BoS), which will deliberate on this matter through an online meeting on March 24, 2026.

Earlier, the Faculty or Departmental Affairs Committee (DAC) meeting was held on March 22, 2026 in the office of the Head of the Department of Political Science to deliberate upon certain issues raised concerning the syllabi of the one-year and two-year M A Programmes in Political Science as per the guidelines of NEP-2020.

“After a thorough consideration, the Committee unanimously resolved to recommend the removal of topics concerning Mohd Ali Jinnah, Syed Ahmad Khan and Mohd Iqbal from the course content of PIPSTC 102 of the one-year Postgraduate programme and course content of P2PSTC 302 of the two-year Postgraduate programme in Political Science to the Board of Studies for its consideration. The meeting of BOS is scheduled on March 24, 2026 at 11.30 am through online mode to further deliberate on the matter,” HoD, Department of Political Science, University of Jammu said.

On March 20, Jammu University (JU) had constituted a 6-member committee to examine the matter with respect to the syllabus of Political Science.

As per the order issued by the Joint Registrar Academic Affairs, Jammu University, the committee has been constituted to look into the matter in the backdrop of media reports and the representations made by some students.

The committee has been asked to submit its report at the earliest.

The committee will comprise Prof Naresh Padha as its convener while the Assistant Registrar Academic Affairs will be its member secretary.

Heads of Departments of Political Science, History, Sociology and Director DSRS will be the members of the panel.

Earlier the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student union of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had protested against the inclusion of a chapter on Muhammad Ali Jinnah and others in “Modern Indian Political Thought” module under “Minorities and the Nation” paper, in the revised post graduate Political Science syllabus under the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

In response, the JU officials had maintained that the chapter was purely academic and in alignment with the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines and the academic curriculum being taught in several universities across the country.
