SRINAGAR: Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has intensified efforts to improve urban sanitation and drainage by installing wire mesh over major drains across the city, officials said. The initiative, directed by Commissioner Devansh Yadav, aims to prevent indiscriminate dumping of garbage, ensure smooth wastewater flow, and reduce waterlogging risks.

Authorities noted that residents in several areas continue to dispose of waste into open drains, leading to severe blockages and unsanitary conditions. The wire mesh acts as a preventive barrier, enhancing drainage efficiency and contributing to a cleaner urban environment.

The JMC also conducts awareness campaigns urging citizens to follow proper waste disposal practices, avoid littering, prevent open defecation, refrain from using polythene, and properly manage Construction and Demolition (C and D) waste.

Between April 2025 and March 2026, the Health and Sanitation Wing imposed fines totaling approximately Rs 14.39 lakh on violators, including Rs 3.58 lakh for polythene use, Rs 8.57 lakh for improper C and D waste disposal, and Rs 2.23 lakh for general littering. Over 3,000 challans have been issued and referred to courts for legal proceedings.

JMC urged residents to actively participate in keeping drains and Nallahs clean, emphasizing that public cooperation is essential for building a sustainable and hygienic Jammu city.
