SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) on Thursday formally sought permission from the district administration to visit Mazar-e-Shuhada on July 13 to pay floral tributes to the 1931 martyrs.
In a letter addressed to the District Magistrate Srinagar, NC General Secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar said that the party will observe Martyrs’ Day on July 13, 2025 (Sunday), as per tradition. The letter mentions that party president Dr Farooq Abdullah, along with senior party leaders, will proceed to the graveyard at 8:00 AM to offer tributes.
The NC leadership requested the district administration to confirm or allot the proposed timing to avoid any confusion. The party has assured it will adhere to the time slot allotted.
Reiterating the significance of the day, the NC said that for decades, it has been observing July 13 as Martyrs’ Day in memory of the sacrifices made in 1931. However, since 2019, the party stated, it has repeatedly been denied permission to commemorate the occasion at the site.
“This year, in keeping with our tradition, we have written to the District Magistrate, Srinagar, seeking permission to peacefully assemble and pay floral tributes at Mazar-e-Shuhada. We sincerely hope that our democratic and peaceful request will be respected, and that the National Conference will be allowed to mark the day in accordance with tradition and public sentiment,” the party said.
