JAMMU: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) on Wednesday commemorated the 25th death anniversary of Madr-e-Meharban Begum Akbar Jehan Abdullah with a solemn and emotionally charged programme held at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhawan, Jammu. Party leaders, workers, women activists, and senior officials gathered in large numbers to honour the legacy of one of Jammu and Kashmir’s most revered figures.
The event, led by Bimla Luthra, JKNC State Vice President (Women Wing) and former MLA, began with Quran Khawani, followed by floral tributes and a two-minute silence to remember the contributions of the woman lovingly known as Madr-e-Meharban (Mother of the Afflicted).
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, speaking as chief guest, described Begum Akbar Jehan as a towering icon of social reform, women’s empowerment, and compassion. “She was not only Sheikh Abdullah’s wife but a leader in her own right, committed to justice, dignity, and upliftment of the downtrodden,” he said. Choudhary also criticised the BJP’s track record on women’s welfare, contrasting it with the National Conference’s tangible achievements, including initiatives during Omar Abdullah’s tenure such as free bus travel for women and enhanced marriage assistance schemes.
Senior JKNC leader Ajay Sadhotra, Provincial President Rattan Lal Gupta, and other party stalwarts remembered Begum Sahiba as a pillar of strength who held the party together during turbulent political periods. Gupta called her the “conscience-keeper of the National Conference,” and urged the women of J&K to draw inspiration from her life.
Addressing the gathering, Bimla Luthra recalled Begum Jehan’s enduring focus on education, healthcare, and social awareness for women, calling her “a mother to all.”
Several key party leaders including Sheikh Bashir Ahmad, Pardeep Bali, Vijay Lochan, Satwant Kour Dogra, and Tejinder Singh were present. Women’s wing representatives from across Jammu region paid their respects and pledged to carry forward her legacy.
The programme concluded with a reaffirmation of JKNC’s commitment to inclusive development, women’s empowerment, and secular democratic values. Similar commemorative events were held by district units across Jammu.
Earlier in the day, Quran Khawani was organised by senior leader G.H. Malik as per the official schedule, adding a spiritual beginning to a day of remembrance and resolve.
