Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has ordered a swift probe into allegations of adulterated eggs being sold in local markets, after a legislator raised serious public health concerns here on Thursday.

The matter surfaced following social media posts by Tanvir Sadiq, MLA, who highlighted claims that eggs containing harmful or toxic substances were reportedly being circulated in parts of J&K. His remarks prompted the government to initiate immediate verification of the issue.

Acting on the inputs, the office of the Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs directed the Controller, Legal Metrology Department, to investigate the matter on priority. The department has been tasked with assessing the authenticity of the allegations, checking markets where such eggs were reportedly found, and identifying any potential health risks.

Officials said the inquiry will focus on confirming whether adulterated eggs are being sold, tracing their source if verified, and ensuring corrective measures are taken without delay. A comprehensive report has been sought within two days.

The government has in the meantime stated that any breach compromising consumer safety will invite strict action.
