Srinagar, Jun 21: The J&K government has ordered the constitution of two separate committees to oversee the development of world-class winter sports infrastructure in Gulmarg (Baramulla district) and Sonamarg (Ganderbal district).
According to a government order issued by the General Administration Department (GAD) on Saturday, the committees will work on transforming the two premier tourist destinations into international-level winter sports hubs.
The Gulmarg committee will be headed by the Deputy Commissioner, Baramulla, with the Managing Director of J&K Cable Car Corporation (JKCCC) serving as Member Secretary. The Chief Executive Officer of the Gulmarg Development Authority will also be a member.
For Sonamarg, the Deputy Commissioner, Ganderbal, will serve as the Chairperson, while the Managing Director, JKCCC, and the CEO, Sonamarg Development Authority, will be the other member and member secretary.
Both committees have been tasked with preparing detailed recommendations within one month to enhance infrastructure, amenities, and environmental sustainability.
The terms of reference mentioned in the order are to provide winter sports facilities, including skiing, to enhance accessibility and amenities and to ensure environmental sustainability. The order also mentions that the chairperson may co-opt any other member(s) as required.
