Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir administration is facing sharp rebuke over its ‘failure’ to declare the Eid-e-Milad holiday in line with the actual moon sighting, with political and religious leaders deriding the move as a glaring disregard for tradition and public sentiment.

Cabinet Minister Sakina Itoo, in a post on X, called the decision “totally unjust,” questioning the very purpose of the caveat “subject to appearance of the moon” if it is not honoured. “Despite repeated requests from the elected government to shift the holiday, no action has been taken. This is playing with the emotions of the people. Such decisions should be at the helm of the elected government,” she wrote s per Alfaaz – The Words, accusing the administration of overriding both faith and representation.

Grand Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam echoed the outrage, calling the government’s stand “most unfortunate.” He said the holiday should have been observed on Saturday, as per the confirmed sighting of the moon. “This mismatch reflects a negative approach towards a revered day which carries immense spiritual and religious significance,” he said in a statement.

Notably, Eid-e-Milad, which commemorates the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad, holds profound significance for Muslims worldwide.
