Jammu records highest rainfall in August in 99 years

Jammu, Aug 24: Unusually high precipitation across the Jammu division on Sunday shattered many records while Jammu city recorded its highest rainfall – 190.4 mms in August in the last 99 years and second highest in a century.

Three years ago, on August 11, 2022, it recorded a single-day high rainfall of 189.6 mm.

So far, the highest rainfall it logged, in the last 100 years, was 228.6 mm, registered on August 5, 1926.

As per Meteorological Department officials, Jammu city witnessed 190.4 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours till 8:30 am, while Jammu Airport logged 166.0 mm; Chatha area 98.5 mm and Bakore 45.5 mm of rainfall in Jammu district.

“This (190.4 mm) was the second-highest rainfall ever recorded in Jammu in August in almost a century. Indicating changing weather patterns, Jammu is logging heavy downpour in the past few years,” they said.

Besides Jammu, many other parts of the division also witnessed heavy rains.

During the previous 24 hours till 8:30 am, Jammu was closely followed by Udhampur with 144.2 mm of rainfall, while Katra registered 115.4 mm, Samba 109.0 mm and Kathua 90.2 mm of rainfall.

Banihal during this period recorded 31.9 mm of rainfall, while Batote registered 23.0 mm of rain; Bhaderwah 20.4 mm; Ramban 32.0 mm; Kishtwar 21.0 mm; Rajouri 14.2 mm and Reasi 43.0 mm of rain.
