
SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir experienced a sharp rise in maximum temperatures on Thursday, adding to concerns over the region’s ongoing precipitation shortfall.
The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar reported that Kashmir division has recorded a 56 percent rainfall deficit so far this season, while Jammu division is facing a 35 percent shortfall.
Weather officials forecast mainly dry conditions across the Union Territory from 19 to 26 February. Light rain or snowfall is likely at isolated places on 27 and 28 February. In the first week of March, skies are expected to be generally cloudy on 1 March, with scattered light rain or snow on 2 and 3 March. From 4 to 7 March, partly cloudy conditions are anticipated.
Several stations reported temperatures well above seasonal averages, with some reaching record highs. In the Kashmir region, Srinagar recorded a maximum of 20.1°C, 9.7°C above normal. Kupwara reported 19.4°C, Kokernag 17.8°C, and Gulmarg 11.4°C, all significantly higher than usual.
In Jammu division, Jammu city recorded 27.0°C, 5.1°C above normal. Other notable readings included Banihal at 19.8°C, Batote 19.5°C, Katra 24.6°C, and Bhaderwah 18.9°C, all exceeding seasonal averages.
