SRINAGAR: The Union Government on Thursday informed the Lok Sabha that Jammu Kashmir has received Rs 37,978 crore over the past five years for the development and maintenance of National Highways, with nearly full utilisation of allocated funds each year.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways allocated the funds to JK in a phased manner, with Rs 2,932 crore in 2020–21, Rs 6,817 crore in 2021–22, Rs 7,370 crore in 2022–23, Rs 10,528 crore in 2023–24, and Rs 10,331 crore in 2024–25. The figures reflect continuous investment in highway expansion, upgradation, and maintenance across the Union Territory.

The Government also disclosed that 2,020 road accidents occurred on JK’s National Highways in 2024, resulting in 426 fatalities, an increase from 294 deaths recorded in 2,342 accidents in 2023. The Ministry noted that road accidents are “multi-causal,” involving human error, road conditions, vehicular issues, and environmental factors.

Regarding construction activity, 976 km of National Highway projects were awarded in the past five years, including 248 km in 2020–21, 287 km in 2021–22, 120 km in 2022–23, 244 km in 2023–24, and 77 km in 2024–25.

The reply further revealed that, unlike several other states where Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) have been implemented on major corridors, no ATMS projects have been undertaken in Jammu and Kashmir to date.
