SRINAGAR: Patriotic fervour swept across the Kashmir Valley today as full-dress rehearsals for the 79th Independence Day celebrations were held at district headquarters and major venues, marking the final preparations for the grand event on August 15.

In Srinagar, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, hoisted the National Flag at Bakshi Stadium, inspected parade contingents and took the salute at the march-past. He later paid floral tributes at the Balidan Stambh, honouring martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. In his address, Bidhuri highlighted the region’s developmental and socio-economic achievements and commended security agencies for their role in maintaining peace during events such as the Hajj pilgrimage and Amarnath Yatra.

Parade contingents included personnel from the BSF, CRPF, ITBP, SSB, Jammu and Kashmir Police, IRP, SDRF, Fire & Emergency Services, Forest Protection Force, NCC, and school students. Cultural performances by students and artists added vibrancy to the proceedings.

Similar rehearsals took place in Anantnag, Ganderbal, Kulgam, Shopian, Baramulla, Budgam, Pulwama, Awantipora, Kupwara, Handwara, Tangdar, Sogam, and Bandipora, with Additional Deputy Commissioners and senior officers hoisting the Tricolour, taking the salute, and inspecting march-past parades.

Addresses at various venues underscored developmental milestones, social welfare initiatives, and measures to strengthen rural infrastructure, healthcare, education, and tourism. Tributes were also paid to freedom fighters and martyrs, with officials urging citizens to participate in the celebrations and uphold the values of unity and harmony.

Cultural programmes across districts showcased patriotic songs, traditional folk dances, and theatrical performances reflecting India’s freedom struggle and cultural diversity, drawing enthusiastic responses from large public gatherings.

The rehearsals ensured that security, logistical, and ceremonial arrangements are in place for the Valley’s Independence Day celebrations, with authorities expressing confidence in the smooth and peaceful conduct of the main events on Thursday.
