SRINAGAR: In a major relief to fruit growers and traders, the Divisional Administration has cleared the backlog of nearly 5,000 fruit-laden trucks stranded on Kashmir’s vital road links. Officials said 4,873 trucks were evacuated over the past two days in an operation supervised by the Inspector General of Traffic.

Of these, 2,239 trucks moved through the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, while 2,634 were facilitated via the Mughal Road. The last lot of around 500 trucks is scheduled to leave Qazigund later tonight, ensuring that all stranded vehicles are cleared and traffic flow on the highway is streamlined.

The administration stated that the drive was conducted under the close supervision of Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, who has been holding daily reviews with stakeholder departments to address growers’ concerns and ensure the unimpeded movement of horticultural produce.

Officials added that apart from fruit trucks, efforts have also been made to facilitate Valley-bound vehicles carrying essential commodities, including LPG, petrol, diesel, vegetables, and life-saving medicines to maintain stocks and meet local demand.

The clearance comes after repeated complaints by fruit growers and traders over heavy losses caused by delays in the transportation of perishable produce.
