
SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir has an estimated 5.83 lakh senior citizens aged 70 years and above eligible for coverage under the Ayushman Vay Vandana Yojana, the Union Health Ministry informed Parliament on Friday.
The scheme, launched in October 2024 as an expansion of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, provides free annual health cover of Rs 5 lakh to all individuals in this age group irrespective of income.
Across the country, more than 93 lakh Ayushman Vay Vandana cards have been issued as of December 05, 2025. The Ministry said the State and UT wise breakup of issued cards is available on the National Health Authority’s dashboard. It added that till October 31, 2025, a total of 7.89 lakh hospital admissions amounting to Rs 1741 crore had been authorised under the senior citizen category.
Nationally, the scheme covers 6 crore senior citizens belonging to 4.5 crore families. Maharashtra has the highest estimated beneficiary count at 66.26 lakh, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 89.06 lakh and Tamil Nadu with 43.19 lakh. Karnataka, which was specifically referenced in the question, has an estimated 33.40 lakh beneficiaries.
The Ministry said expansion of treatment under the scheme is an ongoing process and includes adding procedures, empanelling new hospitals, and widening beneficiary categories as required. It did not indicate any proposal to reduce the eligibility age from 70 to 60 years at present.
