SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir is likely to experience back-to-back wet weather activity as a series of three Western Disturbances are set to impact the region from today, officials said.
The first weather system will be active on March 15 and 16, bringing widespread but generally light to moderate rain and snowfall across the Union Territory, they said.
An independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif said that higher-altitude areas, including the famous tourist resorts of Gulmarg and Sonamarg, are likely to receive fresh snowfall. Other high mountain passes may accumulate snow ranging from six inches to nearly two feet during this 48-hour period.
He said daytime temperatures are expected to drop sharply from late afternoon on Sunday. The maximum temperatures could settle five to eight degrees Celsius below normal on March 16, leading to a noticeable return of colder conditions, the forecaster said.
Two additional Western Disturbances are likely to affect the region from the late evening of March 17 through March 20. He said these systems are expected to bring intermittent light to moderate rain or snow showers, rather than a prolonged continuous spell.
The weather forecaster added that if Eid-ul-Fitr falls on March 21, conditions are expected to remain mostly dry on that day and March 22 he added.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also predicted rain and snowfall across Jammu and Kashmir from March 15.
A senior official of the Meteorological Centre in Srinagar said that erratic weather conditions are likely to continue till March 20, with intermittent rain in the plains and snowfall in the higher reaches. (KNS)
