Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday reiterated that the explosion at Police Station Nowgam was accidental, terming the reports appearing on social-media as conjectures and efforts to mislead the public.

According to a police statement, the blast occurred on November 14, 2025, while experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) were collecting samples from a large cache of recovered explosives for forensic examination.

The government, the statement reads, constituted a high-level committee on November 16, 2025, to investigate the incident. The panel is headed by the Principal Secretary, Home Department, and includes the IG Kashmir Zone, District Magistrate Srinagar, and a senior scientist from the Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory (CFSL), Government of India.

Notably, J&K Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat had on Saturday morning, hours into the incident, said that the explosion was caused by the presence of a large quantity of unstable explosive substances. These explosives had been recovered from a terror module linked to the Red Fort blast in Delhi and were stored at Nowgam police station.

“During the investigation in FIR No. 162 of 2025 of PS Nowgam, a substantial quantity of explosive substances, chemicals, and reagents were recovered from Faridabad on November 9 and 10,” Prabhat had said, adding that the materials were kept in an open area, and the sampling process for forensic and chemical examination had been ongoing for two days due to the voluminous nature of the recovery.

The DGP attributed the explosion to the unstable and sensitive nature of the recovered materials, noting that the FSL team was handling them with extreme caution, terming any speculation about the cause as unnecessary.

Pertinent to mention here, the tragic blast claimed the lives of nine people, including one member of the State Investigation Agency (SIA), three FSL personnel, two crime scene photographers, two revenue officials from the magistrate’s team, and one tailor associated with the team.
