SRINAGAR: Mehbooba Mufti, president of the Peoples Democratic Party, on Monday said that Iran is driven by a strong sense of sacrifice and expressed hope that it would emerge successful in the ongoing conflict, adding that soldiers of the United States and Israel lack the will to fight while Iranians remain determined.

Speaking to reporters in Jammu, she also said that key legislations can be enacted even without the restoration of statehood, asserting that a Union Territory government has the authority to pass laws related to daily wagers, land rights, and the creation of new administrative divisions and districts.

She emphasised that it is the government’s responsibility to fulfil its promises, particularly in providing employment to one lakh youth and addressing the rationalisation of reservations. She called for a fresh review of provisions related to daily wage workers and urged their regularisation on humanitarian grounds, without political considerations, while also seeking re-examination of SRO-related issues to resolve long-pending concerns.

Mufti further said that her party has introduced several bills in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly aimed at restoring public trust and strengthening the institution. She noted that the PDP, as an opposition party, is working to rebuild the Assembly “brick by brick,” claiming it has weakened since 2019.

She said the proposed bills include those related to daily wage workers, land rights, and the creation of a separate division for the Chenab Valley and Pir Panjal regions. The land rights bill, she said, aims to grant ownership rights to people who have been living on land for years, while highlighting the poor economic condition of daily wage workers who remain unregularised despite working in government departments.

She added that both the government and the opposition need to work together to address what she described as the “disempowerment” of the Assembly and restore its effectiveness, reiterating that key governance and public welfare issues can be addressed within the framework of the Union Territory without necessarily requiring statehood.
