Srinagar: Assistant Commissioner Food Department, Mohammad Yamin, has said that nearly 340 kilograms of unlabeled meat were seized at Srinagar Airport and confirmed that an investigation into the matter is underway.

Talking to Alfaaz – The Words, Yameen said, “The State Sales Tax Deputy Commissioner’s enforcement staff at Air Cargo received information about the arrival of an unlabelled meat consignment. We effectively coordinated with the team and ascertained the timing of dispatch. As and when the consignment was being ferried by an individual from Srinagar, it was seized and samples taken for investigation.”

He confirmed that six boxes containing close to 340 kilograms of meat were recovered. “Sample investigations are expected soon. We have already issued circulars that no unlabelled consignment be deemed valid. Despite time-to-time circulation and wide media publicity, this still happened. Action as warranted will be taken,” he said.

Yameen added that the department is also assessing the billing details and the dispatch destination of the seized consignment. “Food operators and outlets are again asked to work and comply as per laid down rules and regulations. If anything is found contrary, we will for sure take action for the larger interest of the public,” he cautioned.

Notably, the seizure was made following prior information shared with the enforcement staff at Srinagar Airport, who flagged the suspicious cargo movement.
