Sopore, Jan 20: Security forces successfully detected and neutralised an improvised explosive device (IED) along the busy Srinagar–Baramulla National Highway in the Tapper area of Pattan in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Tuesday morning.

The discovery came during routine counter-sabotage and patrol operations carried out amid enhanced security measures ahead of the Republic Day celebrations. Officials said, a patrol party comprising personnel from the 29 Rashtriya Rifles, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) 2nd Battalion and Jammu and Kashmir Police spotted a suspicious object on the roadside. Recognising it as a potential threat, the team immediately cordoned off the area to prevent public movement and ensure safety. Meanwhile, in view of the forthcoming Republic Day celebrations, police and other security agencies have significantly intensified frisking and vehicle checking at key locations across Sopore town in north Kashmir. The move forms part of a comprehensive security plan aimed at ensuring peace, public safety, and the prevention of any untoward incidents during the sensitive period.

Security forces were seen establishing multiple checkpoints at strategic points, including main roads, entry and exit routes, busy market areas, and other sensitive locations within the town. Vehicles of all kinds, particularly two-wheelers, were stopped for detailed inspections, while drivers were asked to produce valid documents.
