Baramulla, Jul 5: Hundreds of Sikh devotees from various parts of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district Saturday participated in a grand Nagar Kirtan (religious procession) organised by the Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (GPC) in Baramulla town.

The Nagar Kirtan, a key Sikh tradition, involves a religious procession through the streets and is led by the Panj Pyare (Five Beloved Ones) dressed in traditional attire.

They escort the holy Sikh scripture while devotional hymns (kirtan) are recited throughout the journey.

The procession began from the Qalampora Singhpora Gurdwara, making its way through several localities and the main market, before culminating at Gurdwara Chatti Padshahi.

What stood out during the yatra was the overwhelming support and welcome extended by the local Muslim community. The muslim youths lined the streets to greet the Sikh devotees, offering water, juice, and fruits, a touching gesture that underlined the deep-rooted communal harmony in the Baramulla.

Several local bodies including the Traders Federation Baramulla, Transport Association Baramulla, and Vendors Association Baramulla actively participated in serving the devotees, reflecting a spirit of brotherhood and mutual respect among the two communities.

“The event not only reaffirmed the cultural and religious plurality of Baramulla but also sent a powerful message of unity and peaceful coexistence at a time when such examples are most needed,” said Paramjit singh, president GPC Baramulla.
