Srinagar, Feb 5: Kashmir witnessed heightened security arrangements on Thursday, marked by intensified frisking, increased checkpoints, and enhanced area domination, ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shahís visit to Jammu, officials said.

Although the Home Minister is not scheduled to visit the Valley, security agencies across Kashmir stepped up vigilance as part of a broader precautionary strategy linked to the high-level security review meeting being chaired by Shah in Jammu.

Officials said the measures were aimed at ensuring a secure environment across Jammu and Kashmir and preventing any attempt to disrupt peace.

ìWhenever there is a visit by the Union Home Minister or other high-profile dignitaries to J&K, security is reviewed and strengthened across all regions, including Kashmir,î a senior Police officer said. ìThese are precautionary and preventive measures.î

Across Srinagar and other parts of the Valley, security personnel were seen conducting intensive frisking at major intersections, markets, and entry points.

Additional checkpoints were established and mobile vehicle check posts were deployed to regulate movement and verify vehicles and commuters.

Security agencies have also intensified area domination exercises, particularly in sensitive and crowded localities.

ìThere is enhanced foot and vehicle patrol in both urban and rural pockets to maintain visibility and deter any potential mischief,î the officer said.

Special attention has been given to the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, a vital lifeline connecting the Valley with the rest of the country.

Officials said security along the highway has been tightened, with increased surveillance, frequent vehicle checks and additional deployment of personnel to ensure smooth and secure movement.

ìGiven the strategic importance of the highway, we have put in place layered security arrangements,î another official said. ìThe aim is to ensure there are no security lapses.î

Heightened security has also been put in place at vital installations, including government offices, security force establishments, communication hubs, and other sensitive locations.

Surveillance has been strengthened through both technical means and ground deployment, officials said.

Police have urged people to cooperate with security personnel during checks and frisking.

ìWe understand that these measures may cause some inconvenience, but they are necessary in the interest of public safety,î the Police officer said. “The situation is under control.”

Officials said the heightened security posture would remain in place for the duration of the Home Ministerís visit and could be reviewed based on the evolving security situation.
