SRINAGAR: Minister for Health and Medical Education on Sunday said that a major reshuffle of doctors across Jammu and Kashmir is imminent to enhance healthcare delivery and ensure better patient care.

Speaking during a surprise visit to District Hospital Pulwama, she said many doctors have remained in the same posts for over five years, which hampers efficiency and accountability.

“Doctors who have served at one location for more than three to four years will be transferred. Reshuffling is essential to improve services and avoid preventable tragedies, especially in emergencies,” she said, citing closed operation theatres and staff absenteeism as critical issues.

During her visit, Itoo expressed alarm over the hospital’s poor hygiene and staff shortages, only 4 out of 40 doctors were present. “Even on a Sunday, patients need care. We cannot compromise on cleanliness or availability of doctors,” she said, criticizing the neglect she witnessed.

Highlighting systemic issues across multiple hospitals including Qazigund, SMHS, and Bemina, Itoo stressed the need to break long-standing patterns of negligence. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving emergency services, hygiene, and overall patient care.

The minister’s incessant hospital inspections follow public outrage over a strike at SMHS Hospital after a doctor was allegedly assaulted by an attendant, severely disrupting services. Itoo assured that sweeping reforms are underway and that the administration is reviewing staffing, emergency preparedness, and infrastructure to prevent further lapses. (JKNS)
