Baramulla, Jul 28: A vibrant week-long exhibition showcasing Kashmir’s rich handicrafts and local products was inaugurated today at Gulmarg’s Gondola waiting area, drawing hundreds of tourists and providing a crucial platform for local artisans and Self-Help Groups (SHGs).

The ‘Aakanksha Haat,’ jointly inaugurated by Gulmarg MLA Farooq Ahmad Shah and Baramulla Deputy Commissioner Minga Sherpa, is part of NITI Aayog’s nationwide initiative to promote local products from Aspirational Blocks across India.

The exhibition features an impressive array of region-specific offerings, including intricately woven Kashmiri carpets, handloom textiles, organic produce, herbal goods, traditional crafts, and local delicacies. Live craft demonstrations, cultural performances, and entrepreneurship workshops add an interactive dimension to the event.

“The reason for hosting ‘Aakanksha Haat’ at Gulmarg was to showcase local products of SHGs, artisans, and entrepreneurs to hundreds of tourists visiting this international destination,” said DC Sherpa, explaining the strategic location choice.

The initiative aims to strengthen the rural economy by connecting local entrepreneurs to national and global markets while preserving traditional skills and craftsmanship.

Tourists visiting the internationally acclaimed hill station were seen exploring the exhibition stalls with keen interest, appreciating the authentic craftsmanship on display. The event’s location at the Gondola waiting area ensures maximum visibility among visitors.

MLA Shah praised the district administration’s efforts and emphasised the need for sustained market access to improve local producers’ economic conditions. “More such initiatives are needed to provide continuous support to our artisans and entrepreneurs,” he said.

The exhibition also celebrates Kashmir’s cultural diversity through vibrant performances and displays, offering visitors a comprehensive glimpse into the region’s artistic heritage. Officials later left their handprints on the ‘Hunar ki Chap’ wall, honoring the craft and spirit of local artisans.

The ‘Aakanksha Haat’ continues throughout the week as part of NITI Aayog’s ‘Sampoornata Abhiyan’ (Saturation Campaign), inviting all visitors to explore, interact with creators, and support the ‘Vocal for Local’ movement.
