SRINAGAR: Minister for Jal Shakti, Javed Ahmed Rana, on Friday informed the Legislative Assembly that the government has taken comprehensive measures to resolve the issue of inadequate water supply in Humhama and adjoining areas.

Replying to Calling Attention Motions moved by legislators Qaysar Jamshaid Lone, Saifullah Mir, and Hilal Akbar Lone, the Minister said that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) worth Rs 129.90 crore has been submitted to the Housing and Urban Development Department for approval. The project aims to construct an additional 4 MGD water treatment plant to augment the existing Doodh Ganga Plant at Kralpora, which currently caters to Humhama and nearby localities.

Rana said the proposal, submitted under AMRUT 2.0, seeks to provide a permanent solution to the region’s water shortage while accounting for the future demand of the expanding residential areas.

He informed the House that Friends Enclave in Humhama presently receives water from both the Doodh Ganga and Sukhnag Water Supply Schemes, but being at the tail end of these networks, the locality faces low service levels.

The Minister added that, as an interim measure, the department is deploying water tankers to mitigate the shortage until the proposed augmentation project is approved and executed.

Rana reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring reliable and equitable access to safe drinking water, stating that sustained infrastructure investment remains a top priority for the Jal Shakti Department.
