SRINAGAR: Veteran politician and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah narrowly escaped an alleged assassination attempt on Wednesday night during a wedding function in the Greater Kailash area on the outskirts of Jammu.

Speaking on the incident on Thursday, Abdullah credited his security personnel and divine intervention for saving his life. “I am fine and God has saved me,” he said. He recounted that the assailant, identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, had approached from behind before being overpowered by security forces, including members of the National Security Guard (NSG). Abdullah was immediately escorted to his car and driven to safety.

The incident occurred as Abdullah was leaving the venue. Initially mistaking the gunshots for firecrackers, he later learned that Jamwal had fired two shots. The accused was quickly subdued and taken into custody.

Abdullah said he had no knowledge of the assailant or his motive. “I do not know this man and I have no information about him. I have always kept my doors open for everyone and tried to help people irrespective of party affiliation,” he stated.

Describing the attack as a security lapse, he noted that several senior political figures were present and that proper arrangements should have been in place. “Big political leaders were present, and the police should have ensured adequate security,” Abdullah said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah contacted Abdullah after the incident, confirming the arrest of the accused and assuring a full inquiry.

Abdullah expressed concern over a growing atmosphere of intolerance in India. “Hatred is the biggest tragedy in our nation today, and those who speak about love and unity are finding their space shrinking,” he said, calling for respect for differing viewpoints and freedom of expression.

Referring to the political situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Abdullah reiterated the demand for the restoration of statehood, asserting that the elected government in the Union Territory does not enjoy full powers.

He also warned that ongoing conflicts in the Middle East could have economic repercussions for ordinary citizens. “If the war continues in the Middle East, both the poor and the middle class will suffer due to rising prices. I request the government to use its international relations to help stop the war,” he said.

Abdullah praised his security personnel for ensuring his safety. “I have no words to thank my security personnel who protected me,” he said.

Meanwhile, authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, which briefly disrupted the wedding function attended by several senior political figures.
