
SRINAGAR: Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar has mourned the passing of Prof. Dr. Hamid Ali Durrani, former Professor of Medicine and a trailblazer of Gastroenterology in Jammu and Kashmir, describing his death as a major loss to both the medical and academic fraternity.
In a condolence message, Principal and Dean of GMC Srinagar, Prof. (Dr.) Iffat Hassan, paid rich tribute to Prof. Durrani, calling him a distinguished figure whose contributions to medicine and medical education were extraordinary. She said his demise had left an irreplaceable void, but his lifelong dedication to patient care, academic excellence and mentorship would continue to guide and inspire future generations of doctors.
Prof. Durrani began his distinguished career at GMC Srinagar in the late 1960s as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. Renowned for his academic excellence, clinical expertise and forward-looking vision, he later rose to become Professor of Medicine and Head of the Gastroenterology Division. He was among the pioneers who established and strengthened Gastroenterology as a specialty in Jammu and Kashmir.
A graduate of the prestigious King George’s Medical College, Lucknow, Prof. Durrani was widely admired for his extensive medical knowledge, integrity, selflessness, discipline and strong sense of professional responsibility. Over the years, he mentored numerous students and young doctors, many of whom now serve with distinction in India and abroad.
The faculty, administration, nursing and paramedical staff of GMC Srinagar expressed their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and stood in solidarity with them during this time of grief. The institution prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul and strength for the family to endure the irreparable loss.
