SRINAGAR: The Biochemistry Diagnostic Laboratory at Government Medical College Srinagar and its associated SMHS Hospital has secured accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories under the international standard ISO 15189:2022, marking a major milestone in diagnostic healthcare in Jammu and Kashmir.
The accreditation, valid for four years till 2030, certifies the laboratory’s quality and technical competence in delivering accurate and reliable diagnostic services. NABL, a constituent board of the Quality Council of India, grants accreditation to laboratories meeting stringent international standards.
Officials said the accreditation covers a wide range of routine and advanced biochemical and immunological investigations, including blood glucose, electrolytes, liver and kidney function tests, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), lipid profile, thyroid function tests, enzyme assays, advanced hormone tests and tumour markers, among other specialised parameters.
Principal and Dean Prof Iffat Hassan commended the faculty and laboratory staff for achieving the milestone and emphasised the need to maintain high standards in diagnostic services.
Head of the Department of Biochemistry, Prof Sabiya Majid, said the facility is the first large government-sector laboratory in the Union Territory to receive NABL accreditation of this scale, attributing the achievement to coordinated efforts of faculty and technical staff.
The laboratory is a fully automated, state-of-the-art facility equipped with advanced machinery and robotic systems, capable of conducting nearly 30 lakh tests annually with a high degree of accuracy and efficiency. Officials said its robust quality management system and technical expertise played a key role in securing the accreditation.
Authorities said the institution will continue to expand its NABL-accredited scope in line with global best practices to further strengthen diagnostic services in the region.
